AI approaches in processing and using data in personalized medicine
Abstract. In modern dynamic constantly developing society more and more people suffer from chronic and serious diseases. On the other hand, the population is getting older and old people need special and sophisticated medical and health support. Accordingly, world renowned health big players and stakeholders have been recognized importance of development of appropriate services to help patients but also old/disabled people in making their life bearable and easier. For such support it is needed collection of: huge amount of individual’s complex big data (like clinical, environmental, nutritional, daily activities…) supported by collecting data from smart wearable devices but also collecting the data using clothing equipped with sensors. Such data must be properly aggregated, analyzed, and present to the doctors/caregivers to recommend adequate treatment and actions to improve patient’s health related factors and status.
Techniques and methods of artificial intelligence (AI), data mining (DM), and machine learning (ML) offer the opportunity to analyze big data, consume them, and derive new knowledge and values that are great support in (personalized) medical decisions. Moreover, newest approaches based on federated learning, transfer learning, explainable AI opens new avenues for more quality use of health and medical data in future. Within the tutorial the state of the art in the area of application of a range of AI approaches in personalized medicine will be presented. Additionally, some characteristic examples of use of these techniques in real environments and frameworks will be discussed and at the end challenging open questions for future work will be detected.
